South Africa’s Exxaro Reports 20% Drop in Half-Year Profit

Exxaro Resources mining operations in South Africa

Johannesburg—South African diversified miner Exxaro Resources reported a 20% decline in half-year headline earnings, as higher production costs and a stronger rand weighed on revenue from commodities priced in U.S. dollars.

The coal-focused miner posted headline earnings per share (HEPS) of 13.77 rand ($0.86) for the six months ended June 30, down from 17.24 rand in the same period a year earlier.

The stronger rand reduced the value of dollar-denominated commodity revenues when translated into South African currency, while rising production costs added further pressure to profitability.

Despite the decline in earnings, Exxaro reported group revenue of 22.1 billion rand, up 7% from 20.6 billion rand a year earlier.

The results highlight the continued pressure facing South African mining companies from currency movements, operating costs and volatile commodity markets.
