Johannesburg– The South African rand strengthened in early trading on Monday as investors awaited key domestic economic data, including July manufacturing purchasing managers' index (PMI) and vehicle sales figures, which are expected to provide fresh clues on the country's economic momentum.
The rand traded at 16.4650 per U.S. dollar, gaining 0.6% from its previous close by 0502 GMT.
Market attention is centred on the Absa Manufacturing PMI, scheduled for release at 0900 GMT, which is expected to offer a snapshot of activity in Africa's most industrialised economy. Manufacturing sentiment weakened in June as softer demand weighed on new orders, although lower oil prices helped improve business confidence.
Investors are also watching July vehicle sales data, due around 1200 GMT, for further evidence of consumer spending trends. Vehicle sales increased 15.3% in June, supported by improving financing conditions.
According to Nedbank economists, vehicle sales growth is expected to ease to 9.2% in July, reflecting a high comparison base from last year and a less supportive economic environment.
Despite the expected moderation, sales are projected to remain solid at around 56, 247 units, supported by the delayed impact of interest rate cuts and continued availability of competitively priced imported vehicles.
Meanwhile, South Africa's benchmark 2035 government bond weakened slightly in early trading, with its yield rising 2.5 basis points to 8.605%.
