Johannesburg – The South African rand traded little changed in early trading on Tuesday as investors monitored mixed signals surrounding possible U.S.-Iran peace negotiations and awaited key U.S. employment data expected later this week for indications on the Federal Reserve's next interest rate move.
By 06:12 GMT, the rand was trading at 16.5150 per U.S. dollar, virtually unchanged from Monday's closing level.
Market sentiment remained cautious after conflicting statements from Washington and Tehran over the status of talks aimed at ending their five-month conflict. Renewed attacks on shipping near the Strait of Hormuz also underscored ongoing risks to global energy supplies.
The U.S. dollar recovered from a one-and-a-half-month low, with the dollar index climbing back to around 100 against a basket of major currencies. Meanwhile, oil prices rose by about 1%, rebounding after sharp losses in the previous trading session.
Adam Phillips of Umkhulu Treasury said the rand's direction this week will likely depend on geopolitical developments and U.S. economic data.
"If we are to see some movement this week, that rests with any peace deal between the U.S. and Iranians and the employment data coming out on Friday, " Phillips said.
With no major South African economic data scheduled for release, the rand is expected to continue taking its cues from global market developments, particularly U.S. economic indicators and geopolitical events affecting investor sentiment.
In the bond market, South Africa's benchmark 2035 government bond remained unchanged in early trade, with the yield holding steady at 8.49%.
