The South African rand held broadly steady against the U.S. dollar in early trading on Thursday as investors awaited the release of domestic producer inflation data, while the dollar remained range-bound ahead of the annual Jackson Hole central banking symposium.

At 0614 GMT, the rand traded at 15.95 to the dollar, little changed from its previous close.

Statistics South Africa is due to release July producer inflation data at 0930 GMT, with analysts polled by Reuters expecting producer inflation to have eased to 6.1% year-on-year.

Producer inflation declined to 7.5% in June, from 7.8% in May.

Global Markets

The U.S. dollar index, which measures the greenback against a basket of major currencies including the euro and yen, was little changed after retreating from an eight-day high.

Markets are focused this week on the Jackson Hole symposium, where investors are watching for signals on the future direction of U.S. monetary policy. Particular attention is expected on remarks from U.S. Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh, which could provide clues about the Fed's policy path.

The rand, like other risk-sensitive emerging-market currencies, is influenced by global developments, particularly U.S. economic data and Federal Reserve policy signals, alongside domestic economic conditions.

South Africa Bonds

South Africa's benchmark 2035 government bond was slightly firmer in early trading, with its yield falling 1 basis point to 8.445%.
