Maputo—Mozambique President Daniel Francisco Chapo has appointed Waldemar Fernando de Sousa as Governor of the Bank of Mozambique and Felisberto Dinis Navalha as Deputy Governor.
De Sousa succeeds Rogerio Zandamela, who served as governor from August 2016 until August 2026.
As governor, De Sousa will chair the central bank's Board of Directors, represent the institution before government and domestic and international bodies, and oversee its senior management and activities.
Navalha will serve on the Board of Directors and act on behalf of the governor when the governor is absent or incapacitated. He will also carry out duties assigned or delegated to him under the law.
The Bank of Mozambique plays a central role in maintaining monetary and financial stability. Its responsibilities include conducting monetary and exchange-rate policy, managing Mozambique's foreign assets and supervising financial institutions.
The appointments come as the country's central bank continues to play a critical role in shaping monetary conditions, financial-sector stability and the broader economic environment.
President Chapo is scheduled to preside over the swearing-in ceremony for both appointees on Wednesday, September 2, at his office in Maputo.
