Johannesburg—The South African rand remained broadly unchanged against the U.S. dollar in early trading on Tuesday as investors awaited the release of the country’s leading business cycle indicator, which could provide fresh signals on the strength of the economy.

At 0533 GMT, the rand traded at 16.0225 per dollar, little changed from its previous close.

The South African Reserve Bank (SARB) is scheduled to release its June leading business cycle indicator at 0700 GMT. The indicator incorporates measures including vehicle sales, business confidence and money supply, among other economic factors.

Global market developments remained an important influence on the currency. The dollar index edged higher to 99, as investors assessed an expansion of U.S. sanctions linked to Iran.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced the expanded sanctions on Monday and warned countries that continued business ties with Iran could expose them to restrictions from the dollar-based financial system.

The rand, like other risk-sensitive emerging-market currencies, has remained particularly sensitive to shifts in global investor sentiment since the start of the U.S.-Iran war on February 28.

Attention later this week will turn to South Africa’s July producer inflation figures and budget balance data, providing additional insight into the country's economic trajectory and fiscal position.

South African government bonds were also steady in early trading. The benchmark 2035 government bond was unchanged, with its yield at 8.535%.
