Rights Groups Warn Clean Energy Mineral Rush is Driving More Abuses

Growing global demand for minerals used in clean energy technologies is being accompanied by a sharp increase in alleged human rights and environmental abuses, particularly across Africa, according to a new report from the Business & Human Rights Resource Centre.

The organisation says allegations linked to transition-mineral mining rose significantly during 2025, with Zambia and the Democratic Republic of Congo recording the highest number of reported incidents. Campaigners argue that expanding mineral agreements often move ahead without adequate consultation with local communities or enforceable environmental safeguards.

The report also highlights concerns over security practices around mining operations, illegal exploitation of concessions and the impact of mining activities on surrounding communities. Rights advocates continue to urge governments and mining companies to strengthen accountability as demand for critical minerals accelerates.
